MCKENZIE Family History

Recorded as MacKenzie, McKenzie, Kenzie and Kensit, this is a famous Scottish surname. In the Gaelic it is recorded as Maccoinnich or Macchoinnich, translating as 'the son of Coinneach'. The derivation is from 'Mac' meaning 'son', and 'cainnechus', fair skinned, suggesting that the original nameholders may have been of Norse-Viking nationality. The English pronunciation of the name is interesting as it preserves the medieval Gaelic pronunciation which in most anglicised names, is diffused. The name also appears in early Irish recordings as 'Mac Cainnigh', although strictly speaking the translation is then different as 'the son of the well dressed one'! This seems an unlikely explanation given the propensity of members of the clan to indulge in bloody deeds.

My McKenzie came from Tempo, Co. Fermanagh around 1845 they when to Manchester, England. My grandfather was Alexander (Henry) McKenzie 1835-1902.

I’m doing some digging into my family and my mum’s side (McKenzie) went as far back as John McKenzie who lived in Ireland and was married to a Mary Heneghn. I came across a Hugh McKenzie married to a Kathleen McKenzie. Perhaps we’re related? That story about the sheep is hilarious

My Grandfather's family raised and trained thorobred horses. One of his baby sister's was trampled by a horse accidentally and died. Two of his older brothers beat up a Priest once and his injuries were so severe that he died. The two boys were sent off to serve in a war from their actions. My father, Hugh Alexander McKenzie came to Canada to work on the railroad. I don't know who his parents or siblings were. Also, apparently as the story goes, his family (the McKenzie's) were kicked out of Scotland for stealing sheep. Then his Father married an Irish woman.
