CRAIN Family History

This famous Manx (Isle of Man) surname has no connection with the more usual spelling of "Crane", which is of Anglo-Saxon origins, other than that they are both in a sense nicknames. The Manx "Crain" derives from the Old Gaelic 'Mac Ciarain', which translates as 'the son of Little Kieran', with Kieran itself meaning 'the dark coloured one. Probably half of all Isle of Man surnames are of Gaelic, and mainly Scottish origins, although in this case it would seem that there is a rare Irish association, the Mac Kierans being a small clan in County Donegal.

Trying to untangle the web of my fathers direct line from father to son. Currently have tracked down to William Crain born in Chester South Carolina in 1832 that eventually moved to north Georgia then to Arkansas in Union County where my family has history since around 1870. I now have retired and live about 3 hours from Chester where I hope to pursue untangling my families ties to what I believe started in Ulster Ireland.

In the U.S my Crain line goes back to Kentucky, but I think from there it goes back to Wales, U.K. and Ireland. In Louisiana and especially the New Orleans area we have many Crain/Crane families here in the U.S. David Crain

My father's line can be traced back to Chester South Carolina around 1815 to a James Crain who was born May 2 1792 in North Carolina. James later married a woman by the name of Esther that I have no last name for. Any and all help that helps untangle where this leads is greatly appreciated.
