CARBERRY Family History
This interesting surname is of Scottish and Irish origin, and has two possible sources. Firstly, it may be locational from a place in the parish of Inveresk, Lothian, first recorded in the form "Crebarrin", derived from the Gaelic "craobh", tree and "barran", hedge. Locational surnames were developed when former inhabitants of a place moved to another area, usually to seek work, and were best identified by the name of their birthplace. Secondly, it may be an Anglicized form of the Gaelic "O'Cairbre" and "MacCairbre", meaning "descendant" and "son of Cairbre", a byname perhaps meaning "charioteer".Who have we missed?

ReplyHello everyone! I have been digging to no avail, trying to find burial places for my greatgreatgrand parents. They were from kilfree parish. Michael Flynn (1851-after 1901) who was son of James Flynn (1820-1877) of cuilmore. Catherine (Carberry) Flynn (1850-1888) who was daughter of Patrick Carberry (1810-1864) of cloonsillagh. Both fathers were dead by Michael & Catherine’s 1879 marriage in gurteen kilfree Sligo. I don’t have info on either mother. Thanks for any help.
